Title: The Girls of Summer (1/1)
Author: Leigh, aka leigh_adams
Characters: Paige Truscott & Élodie Pritchard
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,187
Summary: Summer was a time for family -- and other things.
Author's Notes: A happiest of birthdays to my darling Kate, akamugglechump! I hope you've had a wonderful day, my dear! The characters are played by the two of us at the next-generation RPG pink_lambs. Paige belongs to Kate, and Élodie is mine. Hover over French to see the English translation. I hope this brightens your day a bit, Kate! ♥

Summer had always been Paige's favorite season. For one, it meant she was free from school -- it wasn't that she disliked school, per se, but it was more of a chore than anything. She liked being social with her friends, and flirting with boys, but that was about it. Classes... meh. She could take them or leave them.

Secondly, it was warm -- well, warmer than usual -- which meant she could abandon denims and jumpers in favor of dresses that showcased her olive skin, showing off her shapely calves to their best advantage. Perfect for the occasional date or night out with the girls, as she just so happened to be preparing for at the moment.

Summer also meant visiting family. And having family visit them.

Dark eyes glanced at the mirror, falling on the reflection of the tiny blonde intently watching her every move. Since Uncle Neil had married her Tante Gabrielle and moved to France, they'd sent their little pack of blonde Pritchards to spend a few weeks in England every summer -- and in turn, Paige and her siblings spent a week or so every summer in Aix-en-Provence (including, Paige always managed to cajole, a day's shopping in Paris).

Paige's lips twitched. Despite the ten year age gap, she was rather fond of Élodie.

The gigantic white rug masquerading as a dog, curled at the foot of Paige's bed, was another story.

"Are you going on a date tonight?" Her cousin's English was perfect, albeit lightly accented -- not nearly as strong as her mother's, but still distinctive from having French as her native tongue.

"Sort of." Paige reached for her eye shadow palette. Despite growing up in a household where magic was the norm, she preferred the Muggle way of applying makeup. Dipping the tip of her brush into the pigmented powder, she swept it across her lower eyelid. "I'm going out with a group of friends, but there'll be a certain boy there." A certain boy Paige wouldn't mind letting her knickers down for -- but there were some things her little cousin was too young for, French or not.

Élodie's blue eyes were wide as she watched Paige in the mirror. "What is 'is name?"

"That's a funny name."

"He's Welsh." She crinkled her nose at her cousin's reflection. "Élodie's a funny name, too. But at least you don't have to spit out a mouthful of phlegm every time you say it."

Élodie poked her tongue out at Paige. "Papa says Élodie is a beautiful name." She nodded, as if that statement was the final point of the conversation.

Paige grinned and picked up her eyeliner. "And is Papa always right?" With a steady hand, she drew a thin line over the tops of her eyelashes, highlighting her the dark orbs.

"Bien sûr."

She snorted and muttered, "Give that a few more years, and we'll see if your tune changes."

It wasn't that she didn't love and adore her own father -- she did, truly. But he was just so... so rigid about everything. Right and wrong, black and white. Paige's world was much greyer than that. It had led to some spectacular rows over the past year as she teetered on the edge of burgeoning adulthood.

The oversized carpet shifted and yawned, nuding Élodie's bare foot. She giggled and reached down to pet the dog. "Très bien, Pacha."

"You know, we should let Paco --"

"Whatever. We should let the dog sleep in Nick's room tonight. He'll be off at JD's house, so there'll be plenty of room for her to slobber all over." It was less magnanimous on Paige's part than the pleasure of sheer sibling torture. Pacha, in addition to being the size of a small horse, shed everywhere. For the most part, her mother's charms kept it from sticking all over the house.

But Paige was seventeen. A legal witch. Those same charms could... accidentally be removed from Nick's room.

"Per'aps. Pacha likes to sleep in the bed with us."

As if on cue, the dog turned around three times and resettled on the floor. She was asleep in less than thirty seconds.

"Right. Well, if you want, let her in there. I'll be back after you've gone to bed." Paige grabbed her perfume -- a customized scent designed by her Tante Gabby for her sixteenth birthday -- and spritzed it on her chest.

"Derrière les genou, aussi."

"English, Élodie."

The blonde pointed at her kneecap. "Be'ind your knees, too."

Paige blinked and turned to stare at the little blonde, momentarily stunned. "Where did you learn about that?"

Élodie shrugged. "Maman, she makes the perfume. And that is what she does when she is wearing it."

"Huh. Good point." Taking the seven year-old's advice, Paige sprayed another bout of scent behind her knees. She set the delicate bottle down on her vanity and glanced over her appearance with an appraising eye. Make up -- perfect. Dress -- flirty, short, cleavage pushed up and displayed to full advantage. Shoes -- wedges for tonight. It was a casual outing, after all.

She swept her hair up in a slightly mussed style, pulled off her face but loose around her shoulders. Perfect. Turning around to face her cousin, she gave a little flourish. "So, how do I look?"

"Very pretty. I like your nail color."

Paige glanced down at the purple and gold manicure, then grinned. "Why, thank you mademoiselle. Maybe tomorrow, you and I can run into town and get pedicures. What do you say?"

"Vraiment?" The blonde was practically bouncing off the bed in excitement. "And we can play with the makeup, too?"

"Whatever you want to do -- as long as it's in the afternoon." Unless her mother -- or her father -- physically drug her out of bed by her feet, she had no intentions of rising before noon. "We'll even put on blue and purple sparkles, just like your mum and I used to do."

"Becca, Henri, Stéphane, Élodie! Dinner's ready!"

Paige tweaked Élodie's nose and ducked down to press a kiss to her forehead. "You heard Mum, Elle. Dinner's ready. I'll see you tomorrow."

"D'ac!" The little blonde threw her skinny arms around Paige's neck in a quick hug, then dashed out of her room and down the hall. Pacha, after cracking an eye open and lazily peering at Paige for a moment, rose from her sprawled position, stretched, then ambled out of the room after her young mistress.

"Domesticated polar bear," Paige mumbled without any heat, shaking her head. Turning her thoughts to more pressing matters, she grabbed her clutch and checked it for the essentials. Lipstick, a few galleons and sickles, her ID, two condoms, a few breath mints. With any luck, she'd be needing all of them before the night was over.

Merlin, she loved summer.

I love this! Paige is so pleased to have a protege. (I'm too lazy to go searching for accent marks.) Becca is USELESS in that respect. And she's quite happy to have a prospect for a good time lined up. What's life without a bit of adventure and heat? As long as her father doesn't find out...

Thank you, Leigh! I really enjoyed this!

I'm glad you liked it! Élodie would also enjoy spending time with Becca, too, but there's something about spending time with cousins who are so much older (at least in my experience; the cousins I'm closest to are five and seven years older than me, respectively).

Paige? Adventure and heat? We never would have guessed (we should totes do a scene of her and Élodie at Pandora's Box, checking out a certain Piano Man...).

I'm glad you enjoyed! Happy happy birthday! ♥

Hehehe :D

Very cute. Love little (big?) Pacha. And how Paige learned to put perfume behind her knees from a seven year old.

Great job!

Pacha's totes both -- little in years (I think here, she's probably three, so still a puppy), but a Great Pyrenees puppy is, you know, the size of a small horse. And I can so see ickle!Élodie dishing out makeup advice to her cousins -- she learned it all from Gabrielle, after all. ;D

Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for reading, love! ♥
